About Us

Origins

The Milligan Pipes and Drums were founded in March, 1994 as the Milligan Memorial Pipe Band. The band started with a group of eight people led by Stuart Gray, Pipe Major, and Charles Lizotte Band Officer; and originally met in the Veterans Hall in Unionville, Ontario.

The Band is named in honour of the late Harry Milligan of Markham, Ontario, who at some time had tutored most of the original band members.mmpb04c05

The Milligan Memorial Pipe Band started with no uniforms, equipment or cash in the bank. Some of the members owned their own kilts and a few items of Scottish dress. However, by the determined efforts of the band membership who scrounged, begged and borrowed the necessities of (band) life, the Band was able to perform with six pipers and five drummers at its inaugural function at the Unionville Veterans Day Parade, November, 1994.
